The birth of Keep in Touch Tuba Project

Excellent tuba player, extraordinary musician and incomparable pedagogue, Mel Culbertson visited Spain frequently throughout his long career. Among the many courses that Mel taught in our country, for me it was of vital importance the class that in the nineties, against all odds, organized Raul Seguí in Castelló de la Ribera (Valencia) and that was attended by Mel Culbertson during its nine editions. Mel was, in a way, the axis around which in Castelló de la Ribera gathered excellent teachers as Roger Bobo, Miguel Navarro, József Bazsinka, Michel Godard, David Llacer, and Miguel Moreno among others.
At the meeting there were tuba players from all over Europe, young people full of enthusiasm, some of which have already become benchmarks for generations to come. It was at this masterclass where I met Mel.

Later, when I settled in the north of Spain, with the invaluable help of Raul Galan,  I invited Mel to teach at Betanzos. As usual, his incomparable ability to summon people assured the success of the class, counting again with the presence of many young enthusiasts tuba players, eager to work and learn, who worked together with advanced students and professional tubist. Many of those attending such courses are now members of various professional orchestras and harmony bands, and teachers of some of the major conservatories in northern Spain. It was in Betanzos where I made the first contact with Manuel Martinez Villar (Lolo), Francisco Javier Lavía Fontán, Pablo Doval Golmar, all them excellent teachers able to flourish in Galicia successive generations of great tuba players. They, along with David Muñoz Velazquez whom I met later, and Pablo Dopazo Gondar, Hugo Portas Ricoy, Rubén Costa Paz, Nicolás Portas Ricoy, Guillermo Collazo Cortegoso, Isaac Rodríguex Cotrofe, Iván Fernández Alende and all the succesive generations of tuba players  formed at the CONSMUPA, have become the main engine of this project.

In his master classes, Mel taught us not only to play the tuba, but also to love the instrument, to respect it, and to use all the possibilities available in order to express our creativity. Those courses gave us the posibility to meet a great person, humble and generous, an incredible hard worker. We enjoyed a tremendously respectful and dedicated teacher,... an example to follow.
As a result of these meetings, and in some ways as a conjunct result of the activities done in those courses with the work developed at the CONSMUPA Tuba and Euphonium Studio thorough all these years, Keep in Touch Tuba Project was born.

Formed by teachers from different conservatories and music schools of northern Spain, by musicians from professional and amateurs orchestras and bands, and by students of all levels ―from beginners to those already trained and prepared to make the jump to the professional life―, the ensemble has a varied repertoire that includes such a wide range of styles as baroque, classicism, contemporary music, jazz, rock and modern music.
Following the teachings received from Mel Culbertson, from Keep in Touch Tuba Project we intend to establish a learning platform, contributing to the development of young people who benefit from playing side by side with experienced musicians. The concerts involve contact with the real job, offering, sometimes, the possibility of sharing the stage with important figures such as Michel Godard, Andreas Prittwitz and Ton Risco.
On the other hand, the recording sessions teach us to be very effective, to concentrate as much as posible, to get a good recording with only three takes, being as it is so dificult to put together so many people from so many diferent places for a recording.

Keep in Touch Tuba Project is an open, flexible and inclusive group, any contribution helps us grow, knowing that each and every one of the participants have an unsuspected talent, often underused. The demand is high, we must learn to concentrate and make the most of the few rehearsals that we have and finally enjoy contact with the public. Each project is an opportunity to play together, and develop different skills that will be needed to face all kinds of contests and auditions in the future. A group that has the valuable collaboration of María Cuadriello, Juan José Díaz, Jorge Rodríguez, Jorge Juan Deaño, Vanessa Menéndez, Guillermo Odriozola, and Miguel Altable, all them great percussionists, pianist like Oscar Camacho, Maria Luz Bonhomme and Inés Montaña, and harpsichord players like Inés Montaña and Samuel Pedro Maíllo always willing to participate in our projects.
Not forgetting Miguel Angel Fernandez and René de Coupaud, without whose generosity and expertise we could not have carried out many of our projects.

In line with our primarily didactic purpose, Keep in Touch Tuba Project, regularly organizes Master clasess, with excellent teachers like Arnaud Boukhitine, Miguel Valles, Michel Godard, József Bazsinka and Perry Hoogendijk.
Keep in Touch Tuba Project is not an end in itself but a vehicle to spread a conception of music in general, and of tuba in particular, heiress mainly of the powerful influence of Mel Culbertson.
Shortly before the debut concert of the ensemble we received the devastating news of the death of Mel. Unfortunately, this concert became our modest posthumous tribute to the Master. During the sad farewell ceremony at Mel's funeral, there were several particularly touching speeches by family members and friends. Arnaud Boukhitine ended his speech by recalling that Mel always said goodbye with a "Keep in Touch", Mel was not a man of goodbyes, we were always summoned to the next ... probably the last words that we all had heard him pronouncing were Let's Keep in Touch ... days later, reflecting on what might be the most appropriate name for the ensemble, I thought that Keep in Touch Tuba Project adequately represented the essence of the group.
Being as it was an immense personality, Mel Culberton left his mark in many places, forming numerous musicians all over the world who continue his excellent outreach  task, dignifying our instrument.

Our aim is, to the extent of our possibilities, to contribute with our humble grain of sand to keep alive the memory of Mel, teacher and friend.
